Today, Edinburgh is home to 464,000 people, the Scottish Parliament, and many national institutions. The city is the UK’s second largest financial centre.
The Old Town, and the 18th century Georgian New Town are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The annual Edinburgh Festival is in fact a whole series of cultural festivals, including the International Festival, The Fringe and the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. These take place between July and September every year, and see the city welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world.
The city’s most famous landmark is the iconic Edinburgh Castle which stands guard over the city from its elevated position atop an extinct volcano. The castle is Scotland’s most popular paid visitor attraction - and as well as seeing the Scottish Crown Jewels known as the Honours of Scotland, visitors can enjoy unrivalled views across the city.
Princes Street is the main shopping street within Edinburgh itself, though there are numerous out of town shopping centres such as The Gyle, Hermiston Gait and Cameron Toll.
Edinburgh is served by an Edinburgh International Airport with both domestic and international flights. Edinburgh Waverley Station connects Edinburgh by rail with the rest of Scotland and the wider UK. Edinburgh has a ring road, and the M8 Motorway connects to Scotland’s largest city - Glasgow. A tram system opened in 2014, connecting the airport to the city centre.
