In 2007, the city of Liverpool, home to more than 470,000 people, celebrated its 800th anniversary.

It was in the 19th century that Liverpool grew to become one of England’s most important cities: A huge volume of international trade with the British Empire passed through the city - in 1851, Liverpool was described as the New York of Europe.

The population grew rapidly as immigrants arrived from all over Europe, attracted by the city’s prosperity.

Although the latter half of the 20th century saw Liverpool’s fortunes decline, there has been significant regeneration since then, and the city was named European Capital of Culture in 2008.

Of course Liverpool is probably best known for 4 young men who left the city in the 1960s and created a musical revolution across the world.

Today, Liverpool has a thriving tourism industry, thanks in no small part to The Beatles, whose millions of fans still want to visit the places they grew up and absorb the atmosphere of the city that influenced them.

Attractions such as The Beatles Story, The Cavern Club and the many Beatles-related tours cater for these visitors very well. Other major attractions include the Museum of Liverpool, Liverpool Cathedral, and the Merseyside Maritime Museum.
