The Yorkshire city of Kingston upon Hull is usually simply called “Hull”, and is home to just over 250,000 people.
Monks from nearby Meaux Abbey wanted to export the wool from their estates, and Hull was the site chosen for the new port.
Historically, fishing has been an important industry in Hull, and the city also had lots of manufacturing industry - but as manufacturing industry declined in the 20th century there was a period of high unemployment in the area.
Recently Hull has seen lots of regeneration as lots of new housing has been built, as well as shops and business premises. Hull also received a boost when it was named the 2017 city of culture.
Popular tourist attractions include the Old Town, Maritime Museum, Ferens Art Gallery and The Deep. Visitors also enjoy a wander around the Marina, admiring the boats and having a bite to eat in one of the many pubs cafes and restaurants.
