Glasgow is Scotland’s second city - and its largest in terms of population, with more than 600,000 residents.

Originally a small town on the River Clyde, Glasgow grew to become Britain’s largest seaport.  The city became known as the “second city of the British Empire” such was its importance, and the volume of international trade that it handled.

Glasgow became an important shipbuilding centre, and had thriving industries in engineering, textiles, coal and more.  Like many centres of manufacturing, Glasgow’s industries declined in the 20th century in the face of foreign competition.

More recently, there has been extensive re-development of housing and campaigns to promote Glasgow as a destination, including “Glasgow’s miles better” in the 1980s, and becoming European City of Culture in 1990.

Today, visitors to Glasgow are spoilt for choice with many world-class visitor attractions to choose from.  The Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery, The Riverside Museum of Transport and Travel and The Burrell Collection are particular highlights.
