Crewe is probably best known as a railway town - as its growth really started in the 1840s, shortly after the railway junction and station was built.
To this day, railway-related industries are a major employer in the Crewe area with locomotive maintenance and repair depots for diesel and electric locomotives - although the numbers employed are a fraction of their peak.
Road transport is also part of Crewe’s DNA, as the Bentley car factory is located in the town.
There are plans for the regeneration of Crewe’s town centre, and proposals for a hub for HS2.
Visitors will enjoy a trip to Crewe Heritage Centre with its signal boxes and large miniature railway. The main cultural centre in the town is the Lyceum Theatre.
Shopping is catered for by the Grand Junction Retail Park and The Market Shopping Centre.
There’s also an Odeon cinema, and Queens Park is a popular spot with its children’s play area, ornamental boating lake and bandstand.
