Although Crawley occupies an area that’s been inhabited for centuries, it’s best known as one of the New Towns created by the New Towns Act in 1946.
The plan involved constructing houses between the existing villages of Crawley, Three Bridges and Ifield, and increasing the total population from 9,500 to more than 40,000 people.
The plans were so successful that construction has continued ever since, with new neighbourhoods being designated and constructed as soon as the existing ones were complete. As a result, Crawley is now home to more than 110,000 people.
Many small manufacturing businesses offering skilled employment moved to the town as it developed. One of the largest local employers is nearby Gatwick Airport, and several firms have their headquarters in Crawley including Virgin Atlantic Airways, Dualit, and BDO International.
Today, Crawley is also a popular shopping area with a wide range of shops and a large shopping centre called the County Mall with more than 80 shops to choose from.
