As a nation of animal lovers, we Brits like to make sure that our pets are well looked after when we head off on holiday or spend time away from home. This is why so many people are on the lookout for reputable boarding kennels that will look after their pets until they return.
Finding the right kennels is important for your own peace of mind and to ensure that your pet has a comfortable stay. Some of the questions and answers below could help you to find the right kennels for your pet.
What sorts of pets will boarding kennels take?
Boarding kennels are commonly used for dogs and cats. However, there are kennels that will also take other pets such as rabbits. Always check with the boarding kennels that you are considering.
Are the pets kept in pens indoors or outdoors?
It can be either depending on which kennels you choose. For those that provide outdoors accommodation you should make sure that the pens are heated if you are leaving your pet over the autumn or winter periods.
How secure are boarding kennels?
A good, reputable kennel will be very secure. Even with the outdoor pens there are secure doors on each pen and then another enclosure that runs around all of the pens for additional security. However, these pens use mesh so your cat or dog will still be able to enjoy fresh air and see what's going on.
I'm worried about leaving my pet in kennels. What should I do?
The best way to put your mind at rest is to go and visit the kennels that you are thinking of using and taking a look at the accommodation for yourself. You can then check out the size of the pens, look at the surroundings, get a feel for the place, and check out the people that will be looking after your pet whilst you are away.
What if my pet has special dietary requirements?
When you book your pet in to the kennels you will be asked for full details about special dietary needs, medical issues, etc. so that the staff can ensure that your pet is catered for. You will also need to provide information on any regular medication that your pet needs.
What if there is a problem whilst I am away?
Reputable boarding kennels will have a vet nearby that is on standby for any problems that may occur. They will also take the details of your pet's own vet in case they need any information if a problem arises.
Most will also take the contact details of a designated contact that they get in touch with if you are going abroad.
Will I be able to settle my pet in before I leave?
Any good kennels will allow you to get your pet settled into the pen and say your goodbyes before you go. This is a great way to put your pet's mind at ease as well, as you will be with them whilst they check out their new surroundings.
Should I go for the most local kennels?
Many pets don't like to travel, so it is not always a good idea to go too far afield. However, you should also take your peace of mind and the comfort of your pet into consideration. If you are not comfortable with the kennels closest to you then don't use them, as you will spend all of your time away worrying. Find one that you have visited and are comfortable with or that has been recommended by a friend or relative that has used it.
