Birkenhead, in Merseyside on the west coast of England has a population of over 80,000 people, and a history that stretches back to the 12th Century.
Situated on the River Mersey opposite the city of Liverpool, Birkenhead grew quickly during the industrial revolution, and was even home to the first street tramway in Britain.
Although activity at the town’s seaport has reduced in the second half of the 20th Century, the Wirral Waters redevelopment of the dockland area brings hope of a bright future for Birkenhead.
Birkenhead was also home to Britain’s first publicly funded park - and you can still visit and enjoy Birkenhead Park today.
There are many other nearby attractions for visitors to Birkenhead to enjoy, including the International Slavery Museum, Merseyside Maritime Museum and Tate Liverpool.
Shopping facilities within the town are good, and the Pyramids Shopping Centre offers a wide range of well-known high street brands under cover.
