Bedford is the county town of Bedfordshire, and home to more than 80,000 people at the last census.
Bedford has grown up around a ford across the River Great Ouse. King Offa of Mercia is thought to have been buried in the town in the year 796.
In more recent times the town has been home to many people of Italian descent, and more recently still, it’s become home to a growing Punjabi community.
The River Great Ouse - the reason Bedford came into existence still flows through the centre of the town, and there are gardens on either side called The Embankment.
Visitors will want to see Bedford Castle Mound - the remains of a medieval castle in the centre of the town, and a major local landmark.
The Guru Nanak Gurdwara is the largest Sikh temple in the UK outside London, and can be found in Queens Park - it’s a spectacular looking building and well worth making the effort to see.
The Higgins Art Gallery and Museum is well worth a visit if you’re interested in the history of the town.
The Harpur Centre is Bedford’s main shopping centre and boasts 36 stores including all the usual High Street favourites.
