The Essex town of Basildon is about 30 miles east of London, and is home to over 100,000 people.
Like many English towns, you can trace the history of Basildon back as far as the Domesday book in 1086 where it is referred to as “Belesduna”.
Basildon is very popular with commuters as it is well linked to the M25, London and the motorway network. There are also stations where you can catch a train into London Fenchurch Street station.
Shoppers are well catered for with the Eastgate Shopping Centre which has more than 100 shops. If you don’t mind braving the elements, you’ll find more shops in Town Square and East Walk. Westgate Shopping Park is another popular shopping area.
Leisure facilities include Festival Leisure Park with restaurants, and eighteen screen cinema and a bowling alley. There’s even a wakeboarding centre in Basildon!
Visitors can see local landmarks such St Martins Bell Tower - a glass and steel tower, now home to six bells that used to be in St Nicholas Church in Colchester. Don’t miss the large Hollywood style sign welcoming visitors to Basildon.
