Aberdeen is the third-largest city in Scotland. Situated on the East coast, at the mouth of the River Don, the "Granite City" as it's also known is home to more than 190,000 people.
Students from across Scotland and further afield move to the city to study at one of its two universities: The University of Aberdeen, and Robert Gordon University.
Traditional industries include fishing, shipbuilding and textile manufacturing, though since the discovery of North Sea oil, Aberdeen transformed itself into the oil capital of Europe, and experienced enormous economic growth.
Although it's not known for its warm climate(!), Aberdeen has nevertheless been voted the fourth most liveable city in Britain.
The city provides good shopping facilities, including the Bon Accord, Trinity, and St Nicholas shopping centres, and a range of shops on George Street and Union Street.
Visitors to Aberdeen shouldn't miss the Aberdeen Maritime Museum, Aberdeen Art Gallery, or the Tolbooth Museum housed in a 17th Century former gaol.
