Tokari School of Theatre Arts

Kendal, Cumbria
Lancaster festival 2007
Lancaster festival 2007
The aim of the school is to develop a joy of movement and to encourage and foster the love of dance in children, making it fun to learn.

It is hoped that each child will gain confidence which will help them in the future whether or not they pursue a career in the performing arts.

The combination of the different styles offered in the school gives every child a chance to achieve according to their particular talents and abilities.

All the classes are held at Castle Street Centre in Kendal on a Saturday and Dean Gibson School on a Thursday.

General classes are held on a Saturday at various times throughout the day.

Classical Ballet, Modern Jazz, Tap and Musical Theatre are taught giving each child a general vocabulary of every aspect of Theatre Dance.

These classes are non-syllabus, which gives the student a chance to maintain the freedom and enjoyment of movement without the apprehension of an examination.

Children are entered for rosettes and medals which are performance based.

A new timetable is issued at the beginning of each term and follows the school year.

These classes are held on a Thursday evening and covers Primary - Intermediate.

The International Dance Teachers Association syllabus is taught in the school and children can be entered for examinations in all theatre subjects.

Children are entered when I feel they are ready.

As the exams include unset work it is imperative that children continue to attend Saturday General classes in addition to this class.

Examinations are taken throughout the school year.

Since the introduction of the syllabus the school has maintained a 100% pass rate and 100% commended (75marks) and above.

In September 2005 the new Musical Theatre course was introduced.

These classes are held on a Thursday evening.

The course covers all aspects of Musical Theatre ie. drama, singing and dance.

Students who attend a general class and exam/ comp class may attend this class free of charge.

The school has four trophies that are awarded at our annual show to pupils gaining the highest marks in each theatre subject.

This year's recipients were
Ballet - Catherine Cribbens(93)
Tap - Panashe Madhlambudzi(92),
Modern - Catherine Cribbens(91)
Musical Theatre - Jordan Crewes(92).

Fees are payable weekly, monthly or by the term.

A 5% discount is available for families with more than two children attending classes and paying either monthly or by the term. (Please note this discount does not apply to students as it is already a discounted fee)

It is advised that children settle down in the class before paying term fees.

Miss Margaret teaches all classes and exciting opportunities are given to every child whether they attend once a week as a hobby or they follow the professional timetable.
